Kiara
The air in the police station is thick with tension as I navigate through the cold, silent atmosphere. It's my first time inside one, and definitely not a visit I had planned for the day. Beside me, Trey's presence offers some comfort, making the experience a little less unbearable.
In the reception area, I gather Lavender's belongings, a peculiar assortment that speaks volumes about my sister. Lipstick, a roll of condoms, a purple taser, and twenty dollars in single bills. "That's my sister for you," I mutter, shaking my head.

Lavender walks into the reception area with a smug expression, her heels clattering on the floor. She blows a kiss at the male officer at the front desk. He rolls his eyes in response. "Don't be like that," she laughs, "I know you're going to miss me, Deputy Diez."
Her hair is heavily disheveled into a messy bun, her mascara smudged, and she has what looks like the start of a black eye on the left side. Dressed in a tight, red dress, she looks exhausted, but smirks as she saunters over to us.
The last time I saw her months ago, we fought in our family dining room. Anger should have been my primary emotion upon seeing her again, but instead, a bitter taste of disdain lingers. She's pathetic, still making choices that end up in places like this. Her goal was to ruin my life, but really she's continuing to ruin her own. Although, in a twisted way, I suppose I can thank her for showing me how shitty Jordan was, so I could find a man I deserve like Trey.
"Wow, I didn't think you'd actually come to bail me out," she quips. "Is this us making up?"
I scoff, "Yeah right. That's never going to happen."
Her attention shifts to Trey. "And who is this tall glass of iced tea?" she asks suggestively. I step in front of her with a glare, but quickly relax when I glance at the deputies in the room. I don't want to get arrested next for assault. "Let's just get out of here," I hiss.

She shrugs her shoulders. "Cool. Think we can stop at Denny's or something? I'm starving."
"You can get food when we drop you back off at the house," I grit out, turning and grabbing Trey's hand as I storm towards the exit. A biting winter breeze greets us as we step outside, the frigid air seeping through the layers of our clothing. I wrap my cardigan tighter around myself.
Damn, the cold has always been my enemy, but at least Christmas is in a few weeks. I'm excited for Trey and me to spend our first holiday together since he worked on Thanksgiving.
I notice a shift in Lavender's mood as her eyes linger on Trey's car. "Ooh, and he's got a nice car," I hear her mutter.

I grit my teeth, not appreciating the subtle interest in her voice. I don't even want her looking in his direction after what happened with Jordan. Although, I trust Trey completely. He would never hurt me like that.
"Just get your ungrateful ass in the car," I grumble as I climb in the passenger seat. She scoffs as she gets in the backseat and closes the door. The drive to my parents' house is shrouded in tense silence, broken only by my occasional instructions to Trey.
He's never been there before, and honestly, I wasn't sure when I would introduce him to my family. I've been happy just being inside our little bubble where we avoid our families like the plague unless they need something from us. With Candice, that seems to be very often since she somehow guilt tripped Trey into letting her live with him longer. Maggie knows that she's back, but of course, Candy refuses to speak to her. I feel bad for them because they're both drowning their sorrows in alcohol instead of reconciling. Since we're not friends anymore, Candy's been partying with a few of her fake, "popular" friends from high school. It does make me feel a little sad and jealous, but there's nothing I can do but move on and focus on my relationship with Trey and getting my book on shelves in a few more months.
"I hope Jordan isn't still at the house. We are so over," my sister exclaims suddenly.
"Not that I care, but what happened anyway?"
"He was being a little pussy. We were at his parent's house, and got into a fight because he wouldn't buy this purse I wanted. Like there's no way he couldn't afford it, it was only $498. His parents are practically fucking rich."
I grimace in disgust. Who raised this annoying, entitled bitch?
Oh right, my parents.
Trey stays silent, his thoughtful expression revealing that he's taking in every detail, perhaps attempting to understand the kind of person my sister is.
"So how did you get a black eye, then?" I ask.
"Oh, me and his mom got into a fist fight. She threw the first punch, but as soon as I defended myself, she called the police on me," she explains casually. "I swear, I'm so done with that little mommy's boy."
My mouth gapes open. Jordan's mom is literally one of the nicest woman I've ever met despite her occasional snootiness, so for her to hit Lavender...she must have really hated her.
"I was going to marry him, but if he can't take care of me, what's the point, ya know? Now this one...you better hold on tight sis or I-"
I cut her off, "I dare you to finish that sentence." She only huffs in response. "Plus, I don't get with men for their money. I have my own. You and Jordan were living off of me, remember?"
"Ooh, all high and mighty," she taunts. I turn my head to shoot her a glare, wanting to go back there and whoop her ass. I should have left her in jail where she belongs, but noooo, I had to listen to my mother and bail her out. Like always.
She holds her hands up in defense. "I'm just saying I make my own money too, but it's not wrong to want your man to take care of you. I mean, look at Mom. Dad has taken care of her like her entire life and they're fine."
"Fine?" I laugh incredulously. "He's a workaholic, he wanted a marriage where he didn't have to be around much. Mom practically raised us by herself. I mean, if you're excited about a life like that, whatever, but that's not something I want."
"What? You want a house in the suburbs, a couple of crotch goblins? Wake up, Kiara. Guys aren't interested in that these days. Dad didn't want kids either, but he had us to keep Mom company while he worked. He told me that himself."
I hum thoughtfully. I guess she would know that more than I would, but it still sounds fucked up. I wouldn't want a life like that for myself or my future children...you know, if I happen to have any.
Surprisingly, a conversation with my sister concludes without the usual urge to strangle her. Pity, however, lingers like an unwelcome shadow. I can't help but reflect on our differing perspectives on life and relationships. Lavender's outlook, shaped by our parents, clashes with my desire for independence and genuine connections.
With a surprising "thanks," Lavender disappears into the house. Once we're alone again, he weaves his fingers through mine as he steers with one hand. I'm eager to get back to my apartment and get some more sleep now.
"I'm interested, by the way."
I furrow my brows as he grins. "A life in the suburbs with what'd your sister call them...crotch goblins. Yeah, I want a few of those. With you. Whenever you're ready."
My lips part in shock. "Uh really?"
Maybe that was the wrong response, but I really am flabbergasted. Six months ago he never even wanted a committed relationship, and now wants all of that...with me?
Holy shit.
A dry lump forms in my throat, and my heart gallops, shock and anxiety intertwining and coursing through my veins like an electric current. As thoughts of a future with Trey dance in my mind, I'm torn between excitement and trepidation. I imagine us holding a little baby that's half me and half him. It doesn't seem like a crazy idea, but then again, what if our relationship doesn't last long term? Is he not afraid of that as well, or is he just living in the moment?
My book's going to launch soon, my last edits were just sent in to be approved, and then I'll be leaving for book events. He's dealing with so much with his restaurant and his family falling apart...I can just see the obstacles standing in our way.
His hazel eyes flicker to mine, concern etching lines on his face. "What's wrong? I didn't scare you, did I?"
A nervous laugh escapes me. "Sorry, it's not that. It's just I'm still so young, and with everything going on in our lives, I just think we should wait a few years."
I bite back the insecurities lingering in the back of my mind, afraid of how he will react to them. I don't want him to think I'm not all in, because I am...I just don't want to have to get over another long time relationship. Jordan nearly broke me, and if I can't make things work with Trey, maybe I'm better off alone.
His voice, warm and reassuring, cuts through the uncertainty. "No worries, Cupcake," he says with unwavering conviction, "there's no rush, I'm yours forever."
How nice that would be if it were true.
